Wartime trilogy based on Junpei Gomikawa’s novel which followings the journey of pacifist Kaji (Tatsuya Nakadai) from naïve labour camp supervisor to Imperial soldier and eventually to Soviet prisoner of war.

Films featured –

NO GREATER LOVE (1959) – Kaji is relocated to a mine-supervising job in Manchuria, where he is horrified by the use of forced labour.

ROAD TO ETERNITY (1959) – conscripted into the Japanese army Kaji is forced to fight in the name of the imperialist cause

A SOLDIER’S PRAYER (1961) – deals with the consequences of Japan’s defeat and the consequences to Kaji himself.

Throughout the trilogy Kobayashi unflinchingly examines the psychological toll of appallingly complex decisions being made in war.
