Calin Peter Netzer directs this award-winning Romanian drama that traces an overbearing mother’s attempts to regain control of her son’s life following his involvement in a fatal car crash. Holding a privileged position within the country’s ruling class, middle-aged architect Cornelia (Luminita Gheorghiu) is used to getting her own way, employing the full range of her manipulative powers to ensure her life runs smoothly. So when she is informed that her adult son Barbu (Bogdan Dumitrache) is responsible for the death of a 14-year-old boy in a motorway accident, she wastes no time in driving to the local police station where he is being held, intent on using any means necessary, no matter the moral consequences, to gain her son’s release.

Cristian Mungiu latest film – BEYOND THE HILLS – out on dvd

Dark Romanian drama following two young women at odds with their past. Voichita (Cosmina Stratan)’s new life at an isolated convent is threatened when her old friend Alina (Cristina Flutur) appears in the hopes of taking her to Germany. At first they are happy to be reunited but Voichita begins to infuriate Alina with her new found faith and refusal to bend to her will, causing their relationship to deteriorate.

Not only does Alina’s presence cause disruption to Voichita but the whole community feels the strain of her ungodly ways and they begin to believe she is possessed. Alina then falls victim to the religious order of the convent and is forced to withstand a series of exorcism attempts at the hands of the priest (Valeriu Andriuta).
