Guy, a 20-year old French auto mechanic falls in love with 17-year old Genevieve (played by Catherine Deneuve, in her first screen role)), who works in an umbrella shop. After the couple share a passionate night together, Genevieve falls pregnant and must decide whether to wait for Guy (who has left on a two-year tour of combat in Algeria) or to accept an attractive offer of marriage from a wealthy diamond merchant.
