The film focuses on the friendship between 19th century post-impressionist painter Paul Cezanne and novelist Émile Zola.

Zola, from a humble background,  is a successful writer, whereas Cezanne, from a well to do family, is struggling to gain acceptance for his work as an artist.

Differences apart, the two move to Paris and form a strong bond, but when one of Zola’s character seems to be based on Cezanne’s struggles as a painter, the relationship soon becomes strained.
