PATHER PANCHALI

Satyajit Ray’s 1955 debut film depicts rural Bengali life is a style inspired by Italian neorealism. We follow the life of little Apu and the women who shape him. His independent older sister, Durga, his harried mother, Sarbajaya who hold the family together while the man of the household is away. Finally the mischievous elderly “auntie,” Indir.

Although not planned, after Pather Panchali international success, this sequel follows Apu and his family moving from the countryside to the holy city of Varanasi. Apu moves from
child to intellectually curious teenager, eventually studying in Kolkata. The film follows Apu’s academic and moral education, as well as the growing complexity of his relationship with his mother.
