Based on Anna Seghers’s 1944 novel, Transit Visa. The film is set in a dystopian present day world which also contains the world of 1942. A young Jewish man needs to escape Paris , which is about to be sealed off by the troops from a fascist regime. He escapes to Marseille, assuming the identity of a deceased writer named Weidel.

Petzold, by creating two worlds, explores the plight of displaced people and how history is recurring.

Set in pre-Berlin Wall East Germany in 1980. Nina Hoss stars as Barbara, a young doctor starting a new job at a small hospital in the provinces. It transpires she has been transferred there by the government as punishment for applying for an exit visa from the GDR.

Her aim is to escape to the West to join her boyfriend Jörg (Mark Waschke), who has been planning her escape via the Baltic Sea. Barbara, detached and self-contained, keeps her head down and gets on with her work, despite being subjected to random home checks and intrusive body searches. However, as the weeks go by, she becomes both beguiled and confused by the attentions of her new boss, Andre (Ronald Zehrfeld).

On her liberation form a concentration camp, disfigured Jewish singer Nelly Lenz (Nina Hoss) goes on a search for her husband Johnny (Ronald Zehrfeld) who she thinks has betrayed her. The film looks at Post-war guilt and how to settle back in a country that persecuted and rejected you.

Yella leaves her home in the East Germany for a promising job and a new life, but as success is within reach, she finds herself haunted by truths from the past.
