Re invention of the ‘One Thousand and One Nights’ stories and sets them in modern-day Portugal. There are three films to the series – Volume 1 – El Inquieto/The Restless One, Volume 2 – O Desolado/The Desolate One and Volume 3 – O Encantado/The Enchanted One.
VOLUME 1 – EL INQUIETO/THE RESTLESS ONE – Miguel Gomes playing himself brooding over the destruction of Portuguese industry as a result of economic sanctions and austerity in 2013. His wife, the Arabian Queen Scheherazade, tries to comfort him and save herself by telling him a new story each night.
VOLUME 2 – O DESOLADO/THE DESOLATE ONE – focuses on the impact of austerity Portuguese society. Scheherazade tells her stories each night to save her own life, while a wanted murderer becomes a hero for rallying against an incompetent local government.
VOLUME 3 – O ENCANTADO/THE ENCHANTED ONE – Scheherazade escapes the palace to explore the seaside, where the film explores the working-class sport of chaffinch singing.
