Director drama documentary examines the acclaimed composer’s lifelong commitment to pacifism. Using a dramatic narrative to explore the development of Britten’s pacifist beliefs during the time he spent at the liberally progressive Gresham’s School in Norfolk between the years of 1928-1930, the film charts a time which marked a crucial period of the composer’s personal and musical development. Interwoven throughout are contemporary performances of the composer’s works and contributions from, amongst others, conductor and composer Joseph Horovitz, cellists Anita Lasker Wallfisch and Raphael Wallfisch, and Britten’s agent for many years, Sue Phipps.

Collection of three documentaries.  In ‘Blockade’ (2006), archive images of Hitler’s siege of Leningrad show how the city became victim to a blockade which caused the deaths of as many as 800,000 innocent people due to starvation, disease and cold weather. In ‘Landscape’ (2003), Loznitsa records the inhabitants of the Russian village Okulovka while they wait at a bus stop in the middle of winter.

In ‘Revue’ (2008), the director pieces together a collection of archive propaganda material produced in the Soviet Union during the 1950s and 60s. Giving an insight into the mindset of the people at the time, the film shows both sides of the communist ideology from grand images of the Socialist realism art form to the harsh realities of human suffering and poverty.

Documentary drama about British codebreaker and computer scientist Alan Turing. After serving as a codebreaker during World War II, Turing designed the Automatic Computing Engine and helped to develop the Manchester computers. In 1952 he was convicted of homosexual acts and to avoid going to prison he accepted a course of hormonal injections to reduce his sex drive.

Two years later he was found dead and was reported to have committed suicide, though many believe it to have been accidental. The film features contributions from those who knew him and experts who explain how his work has proved significant to the development of technology, while Ed Stoppard portrays Turing in re-enactments of his conversations with psychiatrist Dr. Franz Greenbaum (Henry Goodman).

Pierre-Yves Borgeaud’s documentary follows the renowned Brazilian musician Gilberto Gil as he embarks on a journey around the southern hemisphere to promote cultural diversity. Starting his sojourn in his home state of Bahia, the former Brazilian Minister of Culture first travels to Australia, where ex-Midnight Oil singer Peter Garrett, now Minister for School Education, demonstrates how music and art are helping Aborigines to bridge racial divides. It’s then on to South Africa, where he joins with Johannesburg’s multi-racial MIAGI Youth Orchestra to explore how musical genres can come together and meets some of the local artists, including Vusi Mahlasela, to talk about the challenges of reconciliation.

Finally, Gil returns to Brazil to highlight the struggles of the Amazon region’s indigenous tribes and the fight to protect their threatened culture..
